What is GDP?
Gross domestic product, or GDP, is the most widely accepted measurement of the health of a nation's economy. It is comprised of four components:
- consumption (C) -- represents private-consumption expenditures by households and nonprofit organizations
- investment (I) -- refers to business expenditures by businesses and home purchases by households
- government spending (G) -- denotes expenditures on goods and services by the government
- net exports (NX) -- represents a nation’s exports minus its imports
These components can be referred to in nominal or real terms. Real terms are nominal measurements adjusted for inflation. This is critical for comparing growth from on year to the next (YOY). For example, if GDP increased from 100 in 2020 to 110 in 2021, at first glance it looks like GDP increased by 10% YOY. If inflation was 5% YOY, however, then real GDP growth was actually 5%.
